Read and Rise Family Reading Night

Scholastic and the University of Phoenix are working together to bring us the first of two Book Fairs. The first fair, Tuesday October 2nd, comes with some additional opportunities:

• There will be a community meal (pizza) beginning at 5pm.
• There is a short presentation on helping your child love and participate in reading beginning at 5:30pm.
• While parents are at the presentation, children will be making a book that they can take home with them.
• All families that attend the informational session will receive a $5 gift certificate toward the purchase of a book at the fair.
• If you can't make the meal and presentation, please come to the book fair which will be open from 6-7pm..
• By hosting this fair, Sandburg school receives extra volunteers/ tutors during the day and a higher percentage of proceeds than if they were to host just one fair.

Noche Familiar de Lectura y Recaudación de Fondos

Scholastic y la Universidad de Phoenix están colaborando juntos para traernos la primera de dos Ferias del Libro.  La primera feria será el 2 de Octubre, y viene con las siguientes oportunidades:

•  Habrá una cena comunal (pizza) empezando a las 5pm.
• Luego habrá una corta presentación sobre como ayudar a sus hijos a amar la lectura y participar leyendo, empezando a las 5:30pm.
• Mientras los padres están en esta presentación, los niños estarán en un taller en el que van a crear un libro para llevar a casa al final.
• Las familias que asistan a esta sesión informal, recibirán un certificado de $5 para que compren un libro en la feria.
• Si no puede acompañarnos a esta presentación, acompáñenos en la feria, que estará abierta de 6 a 7pm.
• Por ser anfitriones de esta feria, la Escuela Sandburg va a recibir voluntarios y tutores durante el día y un porcentaje mayor de ganancias del que normalmente dejaría ser anfitriones de sólo una feria.

This week has held many unexpected surprises! Among them is the realization that I forgot to upload the presentation from our first meeting. My apologies! Color Me Rad Run/ Walk

In our efforts to build a stronger community between the students and parents/ guardians of Sandburg, we are looking at getting a group of interested people together to do various community sponsored events. Our first event is the Color Me Rad 5K Run/ Walk. This event promises to be a great time for anyone who would like to participate. You can learn about this even by clicking on the link above. I've included the basics below:

• It starts at 10am on Saturday, October 13th.
• The only cost is the entry fee which is paid directly to the event (which you can do on their website.)
• Children 6 and under can participate for free. All other ages are required to pay the entry fee.
• The team captain is Sarah Batesky and the team name is Sandburg Cougars. (You need this to register as part of the team.)
• Families are responsible for their own transportation; however, we can try to set up carpooling once the date is closer. Please plan on having your own transportation just in case we don't have enough interest otherwise.

Carrera Color Me Rad 5K

Como parte del esfuerzo de construír una comunidad más fuerte entre padres/guardianes y estudiantes de Sandburg, estamos tratando de reunir un grupo de personas interesadas en participar en eventos patrocinados por la comunidad.

El primer evento será la carrera - caminata  Color Me Rad 5K.  Este evento promete estar lleno de diversión para todo el que se atreva a participar.  He incluído la siguiente información básica aquí, pero pueden aprender más sobre el evento siguiendo el link de arriba:

• Comienza a las 10am el Sábado 13 de Octubre en el Alliant Energy Center.
• El único costo, es la cuota de inscripción que se paga directamente al evento (se puede pagar en su website).
• Los niños menores de 6 años no pagan por participar.  Todas las personas de las demás edades tienen que pagar la cuota de inscripción.
• Sarah Batesky será capitán del equipo "Sandburg Cougars".  (Todo lo que tienen que hacer es registrarse como parte del equipo).
• En esta divertida carrera, los corredors son cubiertos con bombas de pintura no tóxica a lo largo del recorrido.  El resultado final: los corredores parecen estudiantes de kinder después de una clase de arte que se salió de control, pero la diversión es garantizada.  
• Este es un evento que se realiza en diferentes partes del país, y ahora es el turno de Madison.
• Las familias son responsables por su propio transporte, pero cuando la fecha del evento esté cerca, podemos ponernos de acuerdo para compartir carros.  Haga sus propios planes de transporte por si no logramos coordinar transporte compartido.

Welcome Back Sandburgers!

This morning marked the first day of school for the 2012-13 school year! When dropping my children off at school, I saw a lot of smiles and tears, nervousness and excitement. Oh, and of course, some silliness! I know all will go well, but I can't help but wonder how they are doing.

I also saw several students and parents learning the new routine and I realized that I should have posted this information a few days ago. 'Better late than never' I frequently say to my children, so here are some reminders about drop-off and pick-up at the school.

• Children eating breakfast can be brought to the gym at 8am. Others can be dropped off at the school on the playgrounds at 8:15am. Supervision is not provided prior to these times. Children in 4K meet in front of the school and line-up on the painted white line. Kindergartners and 1st graders meet on the small playground behind the school. (It is the one that only has 3-4 swings.) All other grades meet on the larger playground. (It is the playground nearest the soccer fields).
• Children coming by car can be dropped off on Tomscot Trail (the road running behind the school) or on Donald Road (the road in front of the school.) Please read the signs to see if you can park in that location if you plan to walk your child(ren) to the school doors or playground. Some spaces in front of the school are designated for bus pick-up and drop-off.
• Mondays are always early release days. This means that children are released at 1:45pm. Tuesday through Friday, children are released at 3:17pm unless otherwise noted. There is no afternoon 4K on days that there is an early release and no 4K on Mondays at all.
• Parents are asked to wait outside of the school when picking up their children to help minimize congestion in the hallways.
• Parents picking children up for appointments (or other reasons) during the school day should stop in the office to sign their children out. This is also true for children arriving to school late.
• If someone other than yourself or a person listed as an emergency contact will be picking up, please remember to call the school and let them know. The school is not permitted to release children to anyone else without permission from a parent or guardian.

¡Bienvenidos Nuevamente Sandburgers!

¡Esta mañana comenzó el primer día del año escolar 2012-13!   Cuando dejé a mis niños en la escuela, vi muchas lágrimas y risas, nervios y emociones.  ¡Oh, y por supuesto, algunas cosas divertidas!.  Se que todo va a estar bien, pero no puedo evitar pensar en cómo les estará yendo.

Vi a varios padres aprender la nueva rutina, y pensé que debí haber publicado esta información hace días.  “Mejor tarde que nunca”, digo a mis hijos con frecuencia, así que aquí van algunos puntos a recordar sobre cómo dejar y recoger a nuestros niños en la escuela.

• Los niños que van a desayunar, se pueden llevar al gimnasio a las 8am. Los demás se pueden dejar en el playground de la escuela a las 8:15am. No hay supervisión antes de estas horas.  Los niños que van a 4K se reúnen al frente de la escuela y se organizan en fila en la línea blanca pintada.   Los de Kindergarten y Primer grado, se reúnen en el playground pequeño detrás de la escuela (Es el que solo tiene 3-4 columpios).   Todos los demás se reúnen en el playground grande (Es el playground más cercano a la canchas de fútbol).

• Los niños que viajan en carro, pueden dejarse en la calle Tomscot Trail (la calle que pasa detrás de la escuela) o en Donald Road (la calle en frente de la escuela.) Por favor lea los letreros que indican si se puede parquear o no en el sitio, si planea caminar con sus niños hasta la puerta de la escuela o el playground. Algunos espacios frente a la escuela están designados para entrada y salida de los niños que viajan en bus.

• Los lunes siempre son días de salida temprana.  Esto significa que los niños salen a la 1:45pm.  De martes a viernes, los niños salen a las 3:17pm a menos que se indique algo diferente.   No hay clases de 4K en la tarde en los días de salida temprana y del todo no hay 4K los lunes.

• Los padres deben esperar afuera de la escuela a la hora de recoger a los niños, para minimizar la congestión en los pasillos de la escuela.

• Los padres que recogen a sus hijos para citas (o por otras razones) durante el día escolar, deben pasar a la oficina para registrar la salida de sus hijos.  Esto también aplica para niños llegando tarde a la escuela.

• Si alguien que no sea usted o la persona asignada en caso de emergencia va a recoger a sus hijos, recuerde llamar a la escuela para informarnos.  A la escuela no se le permite entregar un niño a una persona que no sea autorizada por los padres o guardianes.
