April 2nd: Parking, Sandburg's Future, Nominations
It was great
to see so many people at the meeting. As usual, we opened the meeting with a
question to help us learn more about each other. I was personally surprised by
the number of people that claimed math and science as their favorite subject in
high school. From there, we moved on to the agenda:
1. Due to the date change, our wonderful
teachers were unable to make the meeting. We will work with them to schedule a
time when they can come talk to us about what the children learn in their
class.
2. We talked about traffic safety for a
short time. Mr. Wilfrid shared the traffic safety plan as developed by a past
committee including people from the police department, traffic engineering, and
other invested groups for children’s safety. We hope to make a few slight
changes to make it easier to understand and then have it available for parents.
The committee on Traffic Safety will also continue to look at the situation and
look for possible solutions.
3. Mr. Wilfrid, the principal, gave an
update concerning the future direction of Sandburg school. All of the
information he shared—and much more—will come home via back pack mail in the
School Newsletter. The basics are: MMSD is moving away from the ‘multi-age’
classroom approach and into straight grades; the district is making refinements
to report cards to paint a more accurate picture of how a student is doing; team
teaching will continue to occur; overcrowding continues to be a serious issue
and will worsen in the upcoming year as more classrooms are doubled up;
continued investment in technology makes it possible for a 1:1 student to iPad
ratio for the upper grades at Sandburg; the development of a character education
curriculum will better predict the success of students in their adult lives; a
new Sandburg Handbook is being created and parent involvement will be key. To
learn more about these items, Mr. Wilfrid invites all parents to attend the
staff training on Monday, April 8th beginning at 2:15pm.
4. The nominating committee reported
back with the following nominations: President- Heather Banschbach, Vice
President- Carrie Welch, Secretary- Sheila Rothman-Blakey. Melissa Gavin also
signified she would be stepping down from her membership coordinator role. The
current treasurer, Stephanie Taylor, will finish her term. Please note that
these were nominations and not elections. If you are interested in having a
role on the PTA, please contact any of the officers or nominating committee to
submit your name. Elections will happen at the next meeting (May 14th).
Voting members are asked to attend in order to submit their vote.
5. Volunteer Needs: The Book Fair and
Breakfast with a Buddy will take place on May 9th and 10th.
Sign-up can be done through the facebook PTA page or by contacting Jackie
Moreno at the school.
6. The governor’s budget was released
last month and the district has sent out a call to action asking for parent
support by calling representatives. Chris Gavin is putting together a committee
to host an informational session and do other advocacy work on this issue.
Please contact him if you are interested in being on the committee by sending
an e-mail to the PTA. (sandburgpta4114@gmail.com)
7. Melissa Gavin shared information
about the progress of the garden. She has been in contact with the UW
Continuing Studies division and secured 6 master Gardeners to help build on
what we have and to maintain the gardens in the summer. This is very exciting news
and makes room for a lot of awesome projects.
8. Several events are coming up this
month. Information on all of them will be coming home soon. Take a moment to
read through them:
a. Open School House begins Tuesday,
April 9th
b. Math Night: Tuesday April 9th
beginning at 5pm
c. Sherman 6th Grader
Orientation: Thursday, April 18th starting at 6:30pm
d. Garden Work Day: Saturday, April 20th
beginning at 2pm
e. Scoopie Night: Tuesday, April 23rd

Mount
Olympus Family Day: Saturday, April 27th
g. Book Fair: Thursday and Friday, May 9th
and 10th
h. Breakfast with a Buddy: Friday, May
10th starting at 7:30am
March 12th: Specials
This evening we shared what we wanted
to be when we grew up. I think only one of us managed to do it, or at least,
didn’t change our minds. A few of us are still trying to figure that out. We
also did our things backwards. We started with specials and ended with upcoming
events.
1. Mr. Digate, the REACH teacher,
presented tonight. He works with all students for about an hour per week
learning to use technology, in general, and the iPads more specifically. Second
graders and up go to the LMC once a month to practice typing on the laptops. (This
is now part or core standards and the emphasis on this will increase in the
coming year.) Mr. Digate has done a lot of work researching appropriate
educational applications for student use. He says students love apps like “scootpad”
and “tumblebooks”. He is working on putting together a list of free or low cost
apps that parents can use to support their children’s academics at home. Not
all of the iPads are insured as some were purchased by the school and others by
the district. He requires students to remain sitting while using them to
prevent damage. He is also essential in helping staff learn and manage the new
technology.
2. Ms. Koerner is the art teacher.
Currently, students are working on ceramics, but have done various art projects
throughout the year. Elementary art was supposed to receive some extra supplies
to purchase one time special equipment or items, but the money was appropriated
for other district needs. She is working on creating a wish list of things they
could use in the classroom. On her blog, she has an area of art enrichment activities
to help students learn more about art. She has seen a trend of students coming
into the school with less and less experience in art (including things like
coloring) and less hand strength and lower levels of fine motor skills in the
hands and fingers (which makes art more difficult for students.)
3. Mr. Wilfrid was unable to attend the meeting,
but shared the following information through e-mail: They are in the midst of
planning for next year. Multi-age
classrooms, like 2/3 will be phased out per district decisions. This will not
affect 4/5. They will be in need of hiring 3 more teachers, largely due to DLI
programming. There will be an increase in the number of classrooms being
doubled up, although the exact number of classes/ grades affected by this is
unknown. This will mean more crowded classroom spaces. A question was asked
about the findings of the walk-through from Facilities, but no one had heard
anything yet.
4. Gina, the president, shared that the
PJ Jam raised $40. Fundraising was briefly discussed with suggestions that we do
REAP again, begin the Square 1 Art again, switch to Believe to provide our
spirit wear, use goodsearch and goodshop over google, and look into SCRIP. The
plant sale is coming up and we will be using Bennett’s again, although the
plant choices will change. Also, it was discovered that math night coincides
with the next PTA meeting and so PTA will meet Tuesday, April 2nd
instead.
5. Melissa shared information about the
garden as well. There will be a gardening club during OS and girl scouts will
take a role in helping to maintain it over the summer. She also met with
teachers to get a feel for how the gardens can be incorporated into the
classrooms. There are many plans and some have taken place already. One class
helped to create a worm bin, another will be making newspaper pots. April 20th
will be a Sandburg Garden work day to build a couple more gardens as well as
other possible prep work.
6. Elections are coming soon. Please
talk to PTA members if you are interested in holding an office or otherwise
being involved. The office of president is open.
7. Mark your calendars for these upcoming
events!
a. Fun Fair: March 15th,
6:30-8:30pm
b. Spring Break: March 25th-
April 1st
c. PTA Meeting: April 2nd,
6:30pm
d. Math Night: April 9th
e. Sandburg Garden Work Day: April 20th,
2pm
February 12th: General Questions
The mystery question of the night at
the PTA meeting was, “How did you meet your spouse and/or the other parent of
your children?” This provoked some interesting answers and a lot of smiles.
After partaking in a little light conversation and tasty snacks, we moved on to
the topics of the day.
PTA Business: The following events
are coming up soon! Mark your calendars!
1. Upcoming Events
a. Pajama Jam: Thursday, February 21st

2. Volunteer Needs
a. Pajama Jam: A few more people are
needed for concessions and for hairspray. If you are interested, please contact
Gina Richards via facebook or PTA e-mail. (A link is provided on the home page
of the blog.)
b. Fun Fair: We need about 60-70
volunteers to make this event a success! Please, if you can spare an hour
anytime between 4pm and 9:30pm, please let us know via facebook or the e-mail
link provided on the blog.)
c. Sorting through Lost and Found: We
need people who would be willing to sort through the lost and found items for
names, matching gloves, etc. Some will go to the nursing office and the rest
will be donated to a community center or shelter program.
3. Garden Update: The teachers met to
discuss what help, if any, that they need with the garden boxes in front of the
school. They also shared their vision for what the garden area could become.
The lead of the project is looking to apply for grants to help pay for these
things. If you are interested in helping with the gardens during the school
year or over the summer, please contact Melissa Gavin via facebook or using the
PTA e-mail link on the blog.
4. President’s Update: The Square 1 Art
fundraiser brought in $500. After some discussion, it was decided that we would
not be using them as a fundraiser for the following year. Other suggestions
were brought up, but the only decision made was to discuss it at a later point.
5. Principal’s Update: All items
discussed were part of the general question topic below.
6. Main Topic: GENERAL QUESTIONS
a. Drop-off, Pick-up Concerns: There is
a lot of concern about the safety of the children walking to school (past the
parking lot) and those being dropped-off and needing to cross the street. Other
concerns about illegal parking and general parent behavior was discussed. At
Mr. Wilfrid’s suggestion, the PTA agreed to take on this problem. Kattia Prado
and Alexandra Ortega Olsen will be leading a committee to look at how the
problem can be resolved. If you would like to be on this committee, please
leave a message on facebook (below the link for these minutes) or by sending an
e-mail to the PTA. The link can be found on the blog.
b. Overcrowding Update: Administrators
walked through Sandburg to reassess the space needs. This was also being done
at other elementary schools. Nothing has been said as to what the results were,
but we hope to hear something in the future.
c. Report Cards: A concern was mentioned
about comments not being provided for a rating of “2” on report cards. It was
explained that teachers are not told how many comments to include or what to
comment on. However, no parent should be surprised by their child’s grades. Any
parent that has any questions or concerns should talk to their child’s teacher.
d. Homework Policy: The homework policy
tends to be vague and all teachers are learning to work within it. If you are
not happy with the frequency or amount of homework provided, please speak with
your child’s teacher. They will work with you to meet your expectations.
e. Surveys: The information that has
been received from the surveys that went home in the report cards was reviewed.
Based on the surveys, Sandburg appears to be meeting parent expectations. If
you have not returned your survey(s), please do so. All feedback is greatly
appreciated.

They also shared their vision for what the garden area could
become.
6. Tema
Principal: PREGUNTAS GENERALES
a. Preocupaciones
Si usted no
ha devuelto su encuesta, por favor hágalo.
Todas las opiniones son apreciadas.
November 13th: How to Talk to Your Child's Teacher
It was a small group at the PTA meeting, but a friendly group. We started the meeting with introductions which included one thing we were thankful for. Answers varied from good educators to big cities to being thankful for our families….. most days. We also discussed the following information:

11. The topic of the night was How to Talk to Your Child’s Teacher. Mr. Wilfrid encouraged everyone to remember that they should maintain an open line of communication with the teachers and staff of Sandburg. Remember that all relationships have conflict and that it is important to address concerns early. Don’t be afraid to approach a teacher with a concern, but do so in a positive manner. If you are uncomfortable approaching the teacher or are not seeing results after having brought up a concern, please talk to Mr. Wilfrid. He will speak with teachers on your behalf. All of his information and ore can be found at www.sandburgelementary.blogspot.com13 de Noviembre: Como hablarle a la maestra de su hijo

Tuesday, August 21st: Sandburg Garden Gathering
It was a beautiful night to sit in our camp chairs and on blankets sharing a meal of hotdogs, humus, kale smoothies, and other delicious garden inspired fare. The children made frequent trips to the garden to pick zucchini, tomatoes, and other ready produce. After everyone ate their fill, Gina introduced herself and welcomed everyone to the gathering. The following information was shared:
1. The PTA is looking to do new events! You can learn about these and others by becoming a member of Sandburg Elementary PTA (the one with 57+ members) or going to the blog at sandburgpta.blogspot.com
2. Registration is tomorrow. Be sure to register on-line to save time! There is a new option to pay your school fees on-line as well, but it does mean paying a $3 convenience fee.
3. Next week we have two play dates. Families can meet on the Sandburg playground on Wednesday, August 29th from 4pm[7pm or Friday, August 31st from 1pm-3:30pm. (More information on the calendar!)
4. Also on Friday, August 31st there is a school supply drop off time. (1pm-3:30pm) This is an opportunity for students to bring in their supplies, see their classroom, and possibly even meet their teachers.
5. We are doing a fundraiser with 3 options. Look for more information on the blog, facebook and in your child's backpacks!
6. We have some new board positions: Membership Chair and Language Liaison. The Membership Chair is kind of an ad hoc position with emphasis on getting people involved and the Language Liaison is a bilingual position for the purposes of translating documents and meetings as needed (as well as the blog!) and working toward creating more diversity within the PTA.
7. Childcare will be provided for school-age children by 2 college-aged women this year.
8. A treasurer's report was shared. Attendees were able to take a copy of the budget with them if they chose too.
9. An announcement was made that future meetings will be informational and will not include 'business'. The board will now meet on a different night to go over finances, etc.
After everyone who was interested in sharing had done so, we went around and introduced ourselves. It was interesting to find out where people grew up and how many children they had and the grades each child was in. The gathering was closed with a reminder that our next group get together is TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th at Sandburg School! The topic is CURRICULUM. Childcare is provided and all meetings and materials are translated into Spanish.
siguiente”
1. ¡El PTA
quiere hacer eventos nuevos!.
8. Se compartió en reporte de tesorería. Los participantes tenían la opción de
llevarse una copia si lo deseaban.
