One of our goals this year is to move beyond offering events and honoring teachers. To do this, we have chosen some goals that we believe will affect everyone at Sandburg for the best. Projects are listed below with a short description of the vision and purpose for each. Please, is you have any interest in working in any capacity on any project, e-mail us! We can use your creativity, knowledge, in-sight and passion to make Sadnburg the best it can be! We will be forming committees starting in September!

Addressing Overcrowding

In short, Sandburg has seen steady growth in the number of students that have enrolled over the last 5 years. We have reached our capacity, used up every inch of available space, created more through sheer creativity and sacrifices, and run out of space again. Last year, we spent months educating as many parents as we could on the realities of the space constraints, writing letters to the board, and collecting signatures on a petition to the board asking for some much needed attention on the issue. This year, we need to continue with our efforts of educating parents and continue working on getting the board's attention.

Community Building

Sandburg is a diverse community, but most of us are lucky to know one or two parents of kids in the same class as our own child. We want to build more of a sense of community, belonging, and understanding. There  are several ways to do this and we have chosen the first: A 5k run where parents, teachers, and students can run, walk or cheer! What will be the next thing that can bring people together?

Diversity

Have you ever looked at the PTA board? Do you know who plans the events, making all the decisions about them? Do you see who staffs the events? It's a group of homogeneous people and this is sad because it does not represent the wonderful diversity at the school. This is a little tougher than the others because there aren't as many obvious things to be done. Come and help discover how we can create a group of teachers and parents that better represent the school's diversity!

East Madison PTO Coalitions Representative

This group meets monthly to discuss issues that impact us as east and north side schools, and to advocate for all students; we also sponsor forums for school board candidates, and occasionally other events, and meet annually with the Superintendent.  Our meetings are generally held on the first Tuesday of the month; meetings begin at 6:30, and usually last about an hour and a half.

Proyectos en Marcha

Una de las metas que tenemos es este año, es ir más allá de realizar eventos y resaltar el trabajo de los maestros.   Para esto tenemos algunos proyectos que creemos van a afectar a todos en Sandburg en una forma positiva.  Estos proyectos está nombrados a continuación, con una breve descripción de la idea y propósito de cada uno.  Por favor, si le interesa trabajar de cualquier forma en cualquier proyecto,  ¡escríbanos! ¡Su creatividad, conocimiento iniciativa y pasión son lo que Sandburg necesita para mejorar!  Estaremos formando comités en setiembre.

Enfrentar la Sobrepoblación

En resumen, el número de estudiantes en Sandburg ha crecido constantemente en los últimos 5 años.   Hemos alcanzado nuestra capacidad, usando cada pulgada de espacio disponible, creado espacio adicional a base de sacrificios y creatividad y ya nos hemos quedado sin espacio de nuevo.  El año pasado invertimos tiempo en educar tantos padres como pudimos en la realidad del problema de espacio que tenemos, escribimos cartas al Consejo, y recogimos firmas en una petición pidiendo que se de la atención necesaria a este asunto.  Este año tenemos que continuar nuestro esfuerzo, educando a los padres y continuar trabajando en obtener la atención del Consejo.

Fortalecer la Comunidad

Sandburg es una comunidad diversa, pero con suerte conocemos uno o dos padres de niños en la misma clase que nuestros hijos.  Queremos construir una sensación de comunidad, de pertenecer a la misma y de entenderla.   Hay muchas formas de lograr esto, y hemos escogido la siguiente primera idea:  ¡Una carrera de 5km donde los padres, los maestros y los estudiantes puedan correr, caminar o apoyar a los corredores!  ¿Cuál puede ser la siguiente actividad para unir a las personas de esta comunidad?

Diversidad

¿Se ha puesto a mirar quiénes forman la directiva del PTA?  ¿Sabe quién planea los eventos y tomas las decisiones sobre los mismos?   Es un grupo de personas bastante homogéneo, y esto es triste porque no estamos representando la maravillosa diversidad de la escuela.   Este punto, es un poco difícil pensar que se puede hacer al respecto, porque las soluciones no son tan obvias. ¡Venga a las reuniones, y ayúdenos como podemos crear un grupo de maestros y padres que represente mejor la diversidad de la escuela!

Representante de East Madison PTO Coalition

Este grupo se reune mensualmente para discutir puntos que afectan tanto las escuelas del este como las del norte, y cumple la función de velar por los intereses de todos los estudiantes; también patrocina foros para los candidatos del consejo escolar y ocasionalmente otros eventos y anualmente nos reunimos con el Superintendente.   Nuestras reuniones generalmente son el primer martes de cada mes, empiezan a las 6:30 y usualmente duran aproximadamente hora y media.
