It's Been A While

It's been a while, I know. I've been waiting for the perfect information. Something light, yet informative. It hasn't arrived yet so I decided to go with this instead.

To read an unbiased report of the meeting (at least a majority of the meeting) go to http://www.thedailypage.com/daily/article.php?article=39716  Other issues brought up included overcrowding (no response), dual language immersion programs (she's highly supportive), aging facilities (has seen the need), school communication (per individual child, as a school, and as a district), and I am sure I am missing one or two things.

Dear Sandburg Families,

The overcrowding committee worked hard last year on bringing some attention to the problems caused by overcrowding at the school. We helped parents write letters and sent in several pages of a signed petition. I am sad to say, it didn't get us very far.

That's not enough to stop us though! We are up and running again this year. Our first goal was to get the Sandburg representative from the Board of Education to come and speak with us. Her name is Marj and she is delightful and truly concerned about the issues we are facing at the school. However, she alone can not make the changes we so desperately need to see happen. She needs our help and we need hers!

On Monday a group of us will be going to attend the general Board of Education meeting to make our concerns heard in a more direct manner. You can help in this area! We just need you to be present at the meeting! Simply physically present! We have 2 people who will speak on behalf of Sandburg and one of the wonderful Sandburg teachers has written a little song that we will sing as a group to further illustrate our point. (Don't know the lyrics or refuse to sing in public: no problem! Hold a sign and mumble banana, banana, banana over and over under your breath.)

For those who would like to carpool or just need a ride, please meet in the Sandburg parking lot at 5pm and we will get everyone settled and then be off. For those who prefer to drive themselves, we plan to arrive at the Doyle Administration building (next to the Kohl Center) at 5:40pm. You are welcome to come closer to 6pm when the actual meeting starts. If there is an event occurring at the Kohl Center, just tell the traffic officers that you are attending the Board of Education meeting and they will allow you to park in the parking lot.

This is a really important issue for all students at Sandburg, new and returning, 4kers or 5th graders. We need everyone's support and hope that you can help us be part of a solution!

El Siguente Paso: Ir a la reunión del Consejo (Board) de Educación para compartir nuestras preocupaciones y hacer preguntas.

Donde: Edificio Administrativo Doyle; 545 W. Calle Dayton, contiguo a Kohl Center.

Fecha: Lunes 17 de Diciembre

Hora:  A las 5 pm en el parqueo de Sandburg para compartir carros o encontrar quien nos lleve, a las 5:40 pm en el Edificio Administrativo Doyle.

Qué hacer:  Sostener un letrero, escuchar y posiblemente cantar una canción.

 

Queridas familias de Sandburg:

El Comité de Sobrepoblación trabajó el año pasado para atraer la atención sobre los problemas causados por la sobrepoblación en la escuela.  Ayudamos a los padres a escribir cartas y enviamos varias páginas de peticiones firmadas.   Me entristece decir que esto no fue suficiente para llegar muy lejos.

¡Esto sin embargo no es suficiente para detenernos!.  Estamos en la lucha nuevamente este año.  Nuestra primer meta fue conseguir que el representante de Sandburg ante el Consejo de Educación viniera y hablara con nosotros.  Su nombre es Mari, y ella está muy preocupada por este problema que está enfrentando la escuela.  Sin embargo ella solo no puede hacer los cambios que tan desesperadamente necesitamos.  ¡Ella necesita nuestra ayuda y nosotros necesitamos la de ella!.

Es lunes algunos de nosotros estaremos asistiendo a la reunión general del Consejo de Educación, para expresar nuestras preocupaciones en forma más directa.  ¡Usted puede ayudarnos aquí!  ¡Simplemente asista, necesitamos su presencia física!   Tenemos dos personas que van a hablar en nombre de Sandburg, y una de las maravillosas maestras de Sandburg escribió una canción que vamos a cantar como grupo para ilustrar nuestro punto.  (Si no tiene las letras o no se atreve a cantar en público, ¡no hay problema! ¡Sostenga un letrero y murmure banana, banana, banana una y otra vez mientras dure la canción para que parezca que está cantando).

Para aquellos que deseen compartir carro o necesiten que alguien los lleve, podemos encontrarnos en el parqueo de Sandburg a las 5pm para irnos juntos.  Para los que prefieren manejar, pensamos llegar al Edificio Administrativo Doyle (contiguo al Kohl Center) a las 5:40pm.  Puede incluso llegar cerca de las 6pm que es cuando la reunión comienza.   Si hay algún evento en el Centro Kohl, diga a los oficiales de tránsito que va para la reunión del Consejo de Educación y ellos lo dejarán estacionar en el parqueo del edificio.

Esto es un asunto muy importante para los estudiantes de Sandburg, los nuevos, los que regresan, y los de 4K y 5K.  ¡Necesitamos el apoyo de todos y esperamos que nos ayude a ser parte de la solución!.

Join Us for Sandburg Technology Night

On Tuesday, December 4th, Sandburg will host a Family Night with an emphasis on technology and how it is being used in the classroom. This is another wonderful opportunity to see what your child does during the day, socialize with other parents, and talk to the teachers ans staff that make Sandburg the fabulous place that it is. Flyers will be coming home in backpack mail and there is more information on the calendar. (For those who want the basics, pizza dinner will be served from 5:00pm-5:30pm. The technology portion will occur in your child's classroom beginning at 5:30pm.)

Girl Scouts are Coming to Sandburg

What do Daisies and Brownies have in common? Great friends, high self-esteem, and fun, fun, fun!

Sandburg is beginning its own Daisy and Brownie troops (girls in Kindergarten to 3^rd grade) in January on Tuesdays as part of Open School House. Stop by the library between 4:30 -5:30pm on TUESDAY, DEC. 4 to learn more. Troop leaders (Sandburg parents) will be there to tell you what we envision and answer your questions. Membership forms will be available. Then enjoy the rest of your evening at the Family Technology Night!

¿Qué es lo que tienen en común las “Daisies” y las ”Brownies”? ¡Buenas amigas, alta estima y diversión, diversión, diversión!

Sandburg está iniciando su propios grupos de Scouts Daisy y Brownie (niñas entre Kindergarten y 3^er grado) en Enero, como parte del “Open School House”.  Venga a la Biblioteca entre las 4:30 -5:30pm el Martes 4 de Diciembre para aprender más. Líderes de grupo (Padres de Sandburg) van a estar ahí para explicarles nuestra visión y responder sus preguntas.  ¡Después disfrute el resto de la noche en la actividad: Noche de Tecnología para la Familia!

Square 1 Art Fundraiser

Dear Parent,

Coming home to you soon is a school sponsored elementary fundraiser called Square 1 Art.  This fundraiser takes your child’s artwork and makes it into great products for you to purchase.  These products are wonderful keepsakes and gifts for family and friends.  Your child has been busy making beautiful artwork that can be made into many fun products such as magnets, t-shirts, mouse pads, ornaments and much more!

The money raised from this fundraiser will enable the Sandburg PTA to continue its efforts in supporting our students.  Some of these efforts include field trips, Fall Dance, Fun Fair, Teacher Appreciation Week, 5th Grade Celebration. The list goes on and on. Your help is needed for us to continue offering these opportunities to our school.

Looking Ahead…

• – Look for your child’s FREE STICKERS with ordering information to come home at the end of October.  You will be able to see your child’s artwork and ordering information at the top of the Stickers.
• – All ONLINE ORDERS AND PAPER ORDER FORMS ARE DUE on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16^TH.  No late orders will be accepted.
•  – Approximate Product Distribution will be right before Christmas Break.  Watch for future details.

Square 1 Art is a wonderful fundraiser that celebrates your child’s artwork along with helping our school.  A special thank you to Amy Koerner and Macy Buhler for their help creating the artwork with their students.  We couldn’t have done it without you!

Muy pronto usted recibirá una invitación a un evento recaudador de fondos patrocinado por la escuela primaria llamado Square 1 Art.  Este evento recaudador de fondos toma el arte creada por sus hijos y la convierte en maravillosos productos los cuales usted podrá comprar. Estos productos hacen bellos recuerdos al igual que regalos para la familia y los amigos. ¡Su hijo ha estado muy ocupado haciendo hermosas obras de arte de las cuales se pueden hacer muchos productos divertidos los cuales incluyen imanes, camisetas, bolsos, arreglos navideños y muchas cosas más!

El dinero recaudado por este evento permitirá que <el/la> Sandburg PTA continúe con sus esfuerzos en ayudar a nuestros estudiantes. Algunos de estos esfuerzos incluyen viajes, el baile de otoño, la feria de diversión, la semena dar gracias a los maestros, la garduación del grado quinto.
